Living with Textpattern

Saturday September 2, 2006 in |

Some slight (but not shite) site updates.
From September, this website now accepts gravatars. I like gravatars, although try explaining what they are to somebody who doesn’t “do” blogs and they will think you’re insane. Or at least need to get out more.

I’ve also got better with managing Textpattern and have been adding a few bits and pieces, having got over my irrational fear of plugins.

One thing I’m irked about though is that the Textpattern comments form is marked up as a table. Another is that individual articles won’t validate to xhtml strict. I’ve posted a couple of queries on the Textpattern forum, although to be honest the reception there is so frosty I’d sooner walk into one of those dodgy bars they show in American movies. You know the ones, you walk in and it goes very, very quiet and all the locals stop what they’re doing and stare at you.

In the dodgy American bar you ask for your port and lemon and the barman slides it over to you, not taking his eyes from you and not saying a word.
In the Textpattern forum you post your question and the reply comes in a link to a previous thread on the site. No words, just a link. If you’re lucky.

Anyway, it turns out that I only have two options:

Amend the php code of the Textpattern files
Wait for the next version release
Switch to Wordpress

Okay, that’s three options.

I don’t want to change the php files because it’s slightly risky to do such things and, if Textpattern is supposed to be so marvellous, why should I?
I can’t face switching to Wordpress, even though I like it and use it on another site. It’s just too much of an overhaul after redoing everything not so long ago.
So it looks like I’ll have to wait for the new release. Ho hum.
