Biggest Blog in History

Tuesday October 17, 2006 in |

Today you can take part in One Day in History. This is being billed as the world’s biggest blog, where snapshots of early 21st Century life will be preserved by the British Library for future generations. Anyone interested has between today and October 31 to submit their post.

So if, like me, you’d like your descendants to know about what you did today – the dreary drive to work, the three espressos, the boring meeting, the chicken sandwich, the trip to Waitrose, helping the kids with their homework and the Indian meal – get posting!

Footnote: when I do write my post, I’ll try and make it a bit more realistic. I’ve exaggerated on the coffees (I only had two), the meeting perked up a little when they brought on the dancing girls, it was actually an egg mayo sandwich and shopping was cancelled in favour of gatecrashing an egg and spoon race.

This is what I really wrote:

My name is Stephen Lang and I live in Bristol. I work as a website manager for a district council in Somerset, and my work involves supporting and managing a number of users who write and edit content for the council website. What follows below is my day, in many ways an average weekday for myself and my family….

I’m usually the first to get up in our house, where my early morning duties include feeding the cat, having a shower, getting dressed and making sure my wife and daughter are also getting up! I know it’s unhealthy, but I often miss breakfast as I’m too busy rushing around at this time of the day.Yes, the cat gets to eat but I don’t.

I usually aim to leave the house at 8.15, as it takes a while to drive to my daughter’s school where they start at 8.40. She is in Year 3, the first year of junior school. This morning my wife wants to take her in as it’s the harvest festival assembly today, so I leave the house alone, although not much before 8.15. I then embark on my hour long drive to work. It’s not that far, only 23 miles, but early 21st century traffic is a nightmare. If you’re reading this in the distant future, I hope you’ve worked out a better transport solution.

I get in to work and buy a coffee from the vending machine and eat a banana. Yes, this is where I finally get to eat breakfast. I sit at my desk, turn on my computer and face the day’s work. At the moment we are gearing up to relaunching our website at the end of the month, so there’s quite a few things to keep an eye on. Today it’s mostly looking at emails and answering a few phone calls. A lot of my work revolves around chasing other people, or being chased. Tuesday is my short day, so I’m leaving work at half past two. I drive straight to my daughter’s school, ready to pick her up at 3.40. Although winter is approaching, we have got into the habit of buying ice creams after school. We walk back to the car with our huge ice creams and drive home.

Back at home our time is divided between my daughter’s homework and leisure time. I help her with her piano practice and am surprised how well she is doing. We watch The Simpsons, I cook her dinner, re-feed the cat and I check my website at www.stephenlang.co.uk, where to my surprise I have had a couple of comments from readers. I also write something for my site about this – One Day in History! My wife, who works as a university lecturer, gets home at around six thirty.

Then, that’s about it for the day. Darkness creeps up on us, everybody starts to yawn and my daughter is whisked off to bed. My wife cooks a spaghetti dish, and rather good it is too. I go to bed at around eleven, after picking up and putting down all of the four books I am reading at the moment. I usually fall asleep quite quickly, all over for another day…
